Blossoms & Bouquets

Flowers can do so much at a wedding – they can enliven an uninspiring space, create an aisle where one doesn’t exist and, when worn on wrists and in hair, add a romantic feel to any wedding ensemble. They add colour and fragrance to rooms and are a clever and pretty way to incorporate the ‘something blue’ aspect of the wedding tradition.

If you are looking for something a little different from the traditional wedding flowers consider using native blooms, which are gaining in popularity due to their beauty and versatility. Waratahs have been available in white for the past few years and make a striking addition to a bridal bouquet or centrepiece, as do kangaroo paws, which are available in a variety of colours. Gum leaves (a la Princess Mary) are a delicate addition to any bouquet, while a few slender gum leaf branches in a glass bowl with river pebbles is a simple and elegant way to decorate a table. There are several varieties of banksia which are also suitable for weddings – speak to one of our excellent Peninsula florists about using native plants to create a look that will work for you.

Whichever flowers you choose, consult with your florist as to whether they will be in season when you have your wedding, as using seasonal flowers can save you money (although it is recommended that you allocate 10 percent of your wedding budget to flowers). Selecting flowers which are representative of the season of your wedding is a lovely way to bring the outdoors inside – sweet scented blossom branches in springtime, roses in summer, golden leaves and berries for autumn and frosted branches for winter are just some ideas to consider. In the end, whether you have a large ornate bouquet or simply one you picked that morning in the garden, choose flowers that represent you and they will be the perfect addition to your day.
